BI & processes

Implementing BI reporting for commercial and marketing teams

End-to-end BI implementation: business analysis, data marts, reports for executives and managers, access configuration and ongoing support.

Project lead

Context and challenge

The company needed BI reporting for different user levels and business tasks. Executives and managers required reports for their areas of responsibility, monitoring dashboards for ongoing oversight, and tools for in-depth customer and funnel analysis. Some requests came with a defined specification; others first required investigation of the business problem and clarification of the solution requirements.

My contribution

Led the full BI reporting development and implementation cycle: worked with internal stakeholders, carried out business analysis, gathered requirements and designed report layouts. Built data marts and Power BI reports, configured user profiles and access permissions, and maintained regular refreshes and ongoing reporting support.

Approach and solution

Business analysis and stakeholder collaboration

  • Worked both from defined specifications and on requests where the solution had yet to be established. When a specification was available, clarified the requirements and developed the report for the agreed task.
  • When there was no defined specification, started with business analysis: examined existing problems, identified user needs and gathered requirements. Used the findings to define the metrics, level of detail and intended uses of the report.
  • Designed and agreed the report layout with stakeholders before implementation. Requirements work connected the business objective to the report structure and how users would apply it in their work.

Data marts and report development

  • Created analytical data marts in the database to optimise reporting performance and speed. Data preparation formed part of BI solution development and reflected the metrics and detail required by end users.
  • Developed Power BI reports using SQL, DAX and Power Query. Reporting covered revenue, margins, costs, sales mix, product ranges, promotions and customer communications.

Reports for different users and tasks

  • Created reports for executives and managers, tailored to their tasks and responsibilities. Worked with marketing, operations, production, procurement and HR to introduce analytics into their workflows.
  • Developed monitoring dashboards for regular performance tracking and separate analytical dashboards for in-depth customer behaviour research and funnel analysis. Report format and granularity reflected the task the user needed to complete.
  • Used CPL, CPO, LTV and ROI, cohort analysis, RFM segmentation and funnels in marketing and customer analytics. Reporting incorporated these approaches to assess acquisition channels and study the customer base.

Rollout, access management and ongoing support

  • Rolled out reporting within the company, configured user profiles and assigned access permissions. This supported BI use across different user levels and areas of responsibility.
  • Maintained regular data refreshes and supported the reporting infrastructure after launch. Keeping BI reports operational and up to date was part of my ongoing responsibilities.

Outcome

Implemented a BI reporting system covering four brands and more than 150 outlets. Executives and managers gained reports tailored to their tasks, monitoring dashboards and tools for in-depth customer and funnel analysis. Data marts supported reporting performance, while configured access, regular refreshes and ongoing support enabled use in everyday business processes.
