A shared framework for business metrics and methodologies

Working with the analytics team to develop a metric tree and standardise calculation and data collection methods across the company.

Expert contributor

Context and challenge

The company needed a consistent system of metrics understood by every department. Differences in business entity definitions, data collection rules and calculations led to conflicting interpretations and disputes over the accuracy of results. In a long-term project, the analytics team developed a shared methodological foundation for using metrics and extending the company’s analytical capabilities.

My contribution

I contributed as an expert alongside the full analytics team, developing the metric framework and evaluation methods. My work included building the metric tree, identifying relationships and influencing factors, and agreeing calculation and data collection rules. The project covered both the methodology and its application across departments.

Approach and solution

Metric tree and relationships between indicators

  • Together with the analytics team, we built a tree of the company’s metrics and defined the relationships between them. This made it possible to assess departmental performance within a shared framework and understand how changes in one indicator relate to others.
  • We identified the factors affecting the metrics and described how they influence one another. These relationships informed the evaluation methods, giving departments a common understanding of what contributes to a result and what can change it.

Calculation and data collection standards

  • We developed and agreed common methods for calculating metrics and collecting source data. We documented the definitions of the relevant business entities, including customers and linked accounts, so that every department used the same concepts and rules.
  • The team prepared methodological documentation, business entity reference cards and accessible examples for non-technical staff. These materials supported consistent data maintenance, metric calculation and interpretation of reports.

Departmental adoption and further analytical development

  • The metric framework and methodologies were introduced in every department. Employees gained a shared approach to evaluating results and an understanding of how the indicators used by colleagues and other teams were calculated.
  • The agreed methodology subsequently provided the basis for departmental KPIs and new analytical methods. The shared metric structure allowed analysis to become more detailed while keeping definitions, calculations and conclusions consistent.

Outcome

A standardised system of metrics and analytical methodologies was introduced across all departments. Shared definitions and transparent calculation rules resolved conflicting interpretations and disputes caused by inconsistent approaches. The framework became the basis for departmental KPIs, new methodologies and deeper analysis, giving the company a consistent view of performance and its underlying drivers.

This was a team project. Figures are based on the project team’s materials, with my role identified separately.
